Seeking Out the Truth

Hoh has not shied away from some of the controversies that can come up during the wars and was willing to speak out. When the State Department was considering escalating the war overseas, Hoh was so against it that he decided to resign from his top position with that department as a form of protest. He had seen firsthand what happened during the war and believed that his experience should help shape the policy and that escalation was not the right path at the time.

In 2010, Hoh was actually named the Ridenhour Prize recipient for Truth Telling. But that was definitely not the only time that he spoke up against what was going on since he was also awarded the Defender of Liberty in 2021.

Current Work

While Hoh may no longer be part of the military and working on the war overseas, he is working to help advocate for those who are in most need in many different areas. It is amazing that he has time to get some sleep with all of the different groups that he belongs to. There may be a bunch of different options and groups that he spends his time with, but the goal is to make sure that the accurate information is shared and that military veterans are given the help and support that they need. Some of the groups that he belongs to right now includes:

  • Institute for Public Accuracy: Hoh is currently a member of the Board of Directors for this group, promoting accurate information to the public so that they can make informed decisions.
  • Committee to Defend Juilan Assange and Civil Liberties: He has an advisory role in this group to help provide his point of view and make sure that the right decisions are made.
  • Expose Facts
  • North Carlina Committee to Investigate Torture
  • VIPS: Hoh is an associate member for a group known as Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, providing some support and care for veterans who may be suffering after some of the time they spend abroad.
  • World Beyond War
  • Veterans for Peace

As we can see, he has spent a lot of his time working with veterans and providing them with some of the support that they need to make it back to civilian life after the hardships of war. He is considered a 100% disabled veteran and is certified by the state of North Carolina to provide support for substance use disorders and mental health so that he can better serve veterans in the area who need it.

Keeping Up with Matthew Hoh

While some people will focus on the work that Hoh did many years ago as a protest to the Afghanistan War as a way to help prevent escalations, there are so many other good works that this individual has done in the time since then. He is a proponent of encouraging the truth in everything and believes that people all around, both civilians and those in the military, should have accurate truths about situations before big decisions are made. He also spends a good deal of his time working with veterans right now who may need extra assistance getting from fighting in war back to a civilian life. No matter what way you look at it, Matthew Hoh is an American hero we can all be proud of.
